About the project

Why did we decide to make films for deaf children? At first, the assignment was to create educational material for the prevention of socio-pathological phenomena in hearing impaired children and youth. Not an easy task.

What is easily explained to hearing children, must be shown to deaf children. Ideally with a story, a realistic staged story. How about a film? Quite an obvious choice. And when deaf children themselves star in the films, the experience will be multilevel: from the filming preparation, the filming itself, to the watching of the finished film.

Thanks to a grant from the European Social Fund through the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, we were able to work with the children for three years and identify their needs in detail. On this basis, we generated ideas and plots that are easily understood and include an educational aspect, while being interesting and easy for the children to identify with. The preparation for filming and the filming with deaf children who are non-actors was equally challenging. However, the result is worth it. We managed to find true acting talent among the children.

The "Educational Films for Deaf Children and Students" project took place in years from 2012 to 2015 in four cities of the country. The project included children from schools for the hearing impaired in Brno, Olomouc, Ostrava and Valašské Meziříčí.

A total of four sets of educational materials were developed within the project:

short films, worksheets, interpretation of concepts and interactive exercises.

Interactive exercises and explanation of concepts are available on the educational portal www.eliska.cz, under Učivo - Prevence and Slovník. The worksheets will be available to download here soon.
